A sandbar three and a half kilometres long runs across Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto, held in place by some eight thousand pine trees. The name means "bridge to heaven". The old story is that it is what remains of a ladder the deity Izanagi built to reach the sky, which fell over while he slept. Since the seventeenth century it has been counted as one of the Nihon Sankei, the Three Views of Japan, alongside Matsushima and Miyajima.
