This is a striking large Japanese-style porcelain charger, entirely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue on a white ground — a style known as sometsuke. The charger would make an excellent piece for wall display or as a centerpiece on a plate stand. Center design: A weathered, wind-swept pine tree grows from a rocky outcrop above stylized crashing waves, painted in the loose, brushy manner typical of traditional Japanese landscape painting (sansui). To the right, distant misty mountains rise above a small lakeside village with rooftops tucked into the cliffs, giving the scene real depth and movement.
