Paraiba tourmaline is known for its beautiful neon-blue color. Upon its debut, it became so popular that demand far outstripped supply in the blink of an eye, earning it the nickname “the phantom gem.” It is considered the highest-rated gem among tourmalines and is counted among the “World’s Three Rarest Gems,” alongside alexandrite and padparadscha sapphire. _ Paraiba tourmaline was first mined around 1983 in “São José da Batalha,” in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. This is where it got its name, “Paraiba,” but the first crystal discovered by its finder, Heitor Dimas Barbosa, was reportedly not of high quality. He recognized the potential hidden within that crystal and continued mining in search of better rough stones. In 1988, he discovered a beautiful rough Paraiba tourmaline weighing about 10 kg. When this magnificent Paraiba tourmaline crystal was first discovered, its color was so stunning that people doubted it was natural; everyone believed it must be a synthetic stone. Mr. Heitor obtained a certification from the GIA confirming it was a natural gemstone and exhibited it at the 1989 Tucson Mineral Show. Its unique beauty caused its popularity to explode almost instantly. However, in reality, this Paraiba tourmaline was mined consistently for only about a year. Supply could not keep up with demand at all, and prices skyrocketed, leading it to be dubbed “the phantom gem.” Incidentally, Mr. Heitor and his team named and sold the highest-quality paraiba tourmalines from this early mining period “Heitorita.” These are the so-called “true Heitoritas.” It is believed that these early “Heitorita” stones sold by Mr. Heitor are rarely found on the market today. Generally, what is sold as “Eitorita” consists of unheated Paraiba tourmalines from Brazil that sellers have judged to be equivalent to “Old Neon”—the highest-grade color from the early days. Since there are no standard reference “master stones,” the determination that a stone is equivalent to the highest-grade color is based solely on the seller’s subjective judgment. _ Depending on differences in composition and origin, Paraiba tourmaline exhibits a wide range of colors, from a beautiful, clear blue to a soft light green or a vibrant neon blue. It is a gemstone within the tourmaline group in which copper (Cu) is present in Elbaite as the color-forming element; subtle differences in hue arise depending on the concentration of copper and the proportion of manganese (Mn) also present. Paraiba tourmalines from the Batalha Mine in Brazil, with their neon-blue color, remain the rarest and most valuable today. Brazil is also home to numerous other important mines, such as the Quintos Mine and the Murungu Mine. Today, Paraiba tourmalines are also mined in regions outside of Brazil. Depending on the source—such as large stones from Mozambique on the African continent or those with beautiful blue hues from Nigeria—each possesses its own distinctive beauty. ____________________ 【About Us 】 Willow Co., Ltd.
