The Madonna and Child are reminiscent of 16th century statues, likely the carver was influenced by those earlier pieces. The Madonna bears a crown and holds an apple which the Child charmingly reaches for. Family heirloom, recently discovered when unpacking some of Mom's things.  A visit in the early 1960's was commemorated by the purchase of several pieces, from the famous wood carving town of Oberammergau, Germany. The Madonna and Child are reminiscent of 16th century statues, likely the carver was influenced by those earlier pieces.  The Madonna bears a crown and holds an apple which the Child charmingly reaches for. MEASUREMENTS:  The piece stands approximately 11" tall. CONDITION:  There is extensive c raquelure to the surface with multiple areas of missing paint.  It does give the  piece a wonderful, antique patina but the buyer needs to be aware of the damage, likely caused by age, storage, temperature changes, etc. To stop the loss of further paint, buyer may wish to seal the surface with a clear, matte lacquer spray.  This should stop any further paint loss.
