They are associated with Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat in Lopburi and were first recorded as being unearthed around 1907 . Early discoveries showed the amulets with a dark black surface and traces of white mercury residue embedded in the crevices. Over time and with usage, this mercury naturally disappears, which is typical of genuinely old pieces. After the early finds, only small numbers were discovered until 1965 , when a larger group of amulets was unearthed from a small pagoda located in front of the main stupa of the temple.
