Pope Saint John XXIII (1881-1963, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) was pope from 1958 until his death from stomach cancer in 1963. Pope Saint John XXIII  (1881-1963, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) was pope from 1958 until his death from stomach cancer in 1963.  His selection had been unexpected, and at age 76, Roncalli had traveled to the College of Cardinals' conclave in Rome with a return train ticket to Venice in his pocket.  He was the first pope in more than 500 years to take the pontifical name of "John."   Today, John XXIII is affectionately known as the "Good Pope" or in Italian, "il Papa buono." The soil encapsulated on the reverse side of this medal is from the Roman Catacombs -- ancient underground Christian burial tunnels which date back to the 2nd century AD. The medal's metal is unmarked, silver in color. There's little tarnish or wear, as shown. 5/8" in diameter with a brass jump ring. Condition: Used.
