SYNOPSIS/PLOT -  Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed   is a 1969 British   horror film   directed by   Terence Fisher   for   Hammer Films , starring   Peter Cushing ,   Freddie Jones ,   Veronica Carlson   and   Simon Ward .   The film is the fifth in a   series   of   Hammer   films focusing on Baron   Victor Frankenstein , who, in this entry, terrorises those around him in a bid to uncover the secrets of Dr. Frederick Brandt, a former associate confined to a lunatic asylum. It marked the final movie by  Warner Bros.-Seven Arts  to be released under  Warner Bros. Pictures  when the company was acquired by  Kinney National Company . The scene where  Victor Frankenstein  rapes Anna Spengler was filmed over the objections of both  Peter Cushing  and  Veronica Carlson , and director  Terence Fisher , who halted it when he felt enough was enough. It was not in the original script, but the scene was added at the insistence of  Hammer  executive  James Carreras , who was under pressure to keep the American distributors happy. The scenes featuring  Thorley Walters  as Inspector Frisch were also late additions to the original script; they have been described as unnecessary, adding an unwelcome element of comedy into the suspenseful story and also making the film too long. Variety  called the film "a good-enough example of its low-key type, with artwork rather better than usual (less obvious backcloths, etc.) a minimum of artless dialogue, good lensing by  Arthur Grant  and a solid all round cast." The Monthly Film Bulletin  called it "the most spirited Hammer horror in some time. They can range from publicity portraits featuring just the main stars or from specific scenes in the movie, to "behind the scenes" with film crew and/or director on the movie set during the production of the film. In numerous cases, there was usually some type of descriptive information (snipe) included on the back of that press still that explained who's in that scene and what it represented. Sometimes the studio's publicity department would type the description on a separate sheet of smaller paper and glue it to the back side of the still (with a key number). Many press stills also have a  studio key number  (bottom right)  that was   normally included on the original negative itself which identifies the still number in that set. Quite often they will include the NSS number and studio information shown on the bottom too, but not always. They are normally included as part of a press kit which can contain a set of stills. Every presskit is different with a varying number of press stills from 8 (mini presskit) to over 30. COLLECTIBLE MOVIE PHOTOS The use of theatrical press/publicity stills as a promotional/marketing tool dates all the way back to the silent film era. Long before posters ever existed,  8"x10"   (20.32 x 25.4 cm),  movie photographs were extensively used by the first nickelodeons as a very popular form of advertising all their featured movies. Press stills are normally included in theatrical  press kits,  which  are now very sought-after by movie memorabilia collectors. Even on their own, original theatrical publicity/press stills offer a more cost effective alternative as opposed to collecting larger sizes of movie material such as lobby & window cards, 1 (one) and 2 (two)-sheet theatrical movie posters and British Quads among others! Lobby Cards Movie lobby cards are a remarkable American creation. They are considered a hybrid of theatrical movie posters and movie star publicity photos. In the early 1910’s, the small nickelodeons, where films were first shown, started evolving into larger, more permanent, and more elegant venues. As a result of this growth, more advertising was eventually required to promote the movies these new movie palaces were showcasing. So, in addition to the spectacular, colorful lithographic movie posters, there came a need for more photographic images. Circa 1913, lobby card sets started to be produced, and they were, basically, photographs printed on a heavy paper resembling cardboard. For many years, lobby sets were designed in both an 11″ x 14″  (27.94 x 35.56 cm)  format and 8″ x 10″ (20 x 26 cm). Eventually, the larger 11″ x 14″ size became more popular and the standard size for American lobby cards. Sets usually contained 8 scenes with a "title" card, but sets of as few as 4 (four) and as many as 15 (fifteen) have also been produced. American lobby cards typically measure 11" x 14" (27.94 x 35.56 cm) and were always printed in sets of 8 (some lower budget movies only released a set of 4). Most lobby card sets (usually pre-1970) included a "title card". It featured superlative artwork and the credits from the movie. It was also very different in appearance from the other 7  cards in that set. Most  lobby card sets are gorgeous and feature spectacular artwork. This would most often be cards dating from the 1940s up to the 1980s. These can encompass very obscure movies, with no familiar stars but with phenomenal images that are a "must have" for your lobby card collection! Today, it's extremely difficult to find complete lobby card sets from movies released before 1970, since most of them were sold individually to collectors. Additionally, they were printed on a matte card stock which was thicker than typical poster paper. However, there were some exceptions for lobby cards printed from numerous low budget films and with some released in the 1980s. They feature "never before seen" production scenes and candid shots taken during the actual filming of the movie.
