Pair Vintage Reinhold Merkelbach German Beer Steins 426/1 Postilion Hohlwein Pair of vintage Reinhold Merkelbach salt-glazed stoneware beer steins from the Westerwald region of Germany. Both pieces share the same body mold and the same hinged pewter lid with fan thumblift, and both carry the impressed ECHT SALZGLASIERT mark with the RM monogram in a circle plus "Made in Germany" on the base. The mark style dates these to circa 1968 to 1971 per documented Merkelbach mark references. Stein one is model 426/1 "Postilion and Coach." This is a hand-incised cobalt-on-gray design that traces back to a pre-WWI Ludwig Hohlwein illustration from around 1908, which Merkelbach reissued in the handgeritzt (hand-scratched) technique starting in 1938 and continued producing into the 1970s. The scene shows a mounted postilion blowing his coach horn alongside a horse-drawn postal carriage with spoked wheels and paneled coach body. Base marked "426/1." Stein two is from the same 426 mold series with a polychrome enameled decoration. The cobalt panel shows multiple 18th-century gentlemen in red frock coats, white wigs, tricorn hats and buckled shoes, one carrying tankards and another holding a multi-branch candelabra. Reds, yellows, greens and whites over the cobalt ground. Base marked with the same Merkelbach maker stamp. Both steins measure approximately 7 inches tall to the top of the thumblift, 4 inches across at the base, 6 inches wide including the handle. Standard 0.5 liter (half-liter) capacity. Each weighs approximately 2 lbs. Both in nice cosmetic order for the age. No chips, cracks or hairlines found. Pewter lids hinge and close correctly. Pewter shows the expected light surface scuffing, scratching and age patina (not polished). Salt glaze body is bright with the characteristic pebbled "orange peel" texture. Stein one shows a small natural cobalt firing spot near the rim area which is original to the firing process not damage. Base of each shows light grime and incidental hand-scratched decorator inspection marks ("x" and "h" type symbols) which are normal Merkelbach factory practice. Reinhold Merkelbach (Höhr-Grenzhausen, Westerwald) was founded in 1843 and operated until 2007, and is one of the most respected names in German salt-glazed stoneware. The firm collaborated with major Jugendstil designers including Hohlwein, Riemerschmid, van de Velde and Wynand. These two steins are mid-century production but use design vocabulary that goes back to the original Hohlwein-era catalog. Sold as a matched pair. Display well together. May ship USPS, UPS or FEDEX at SELLERS discretion. Condition: Used. Category: Collectibles › Breweriana, Beer › Drinkware, Steins › Lidded Steins › Germany. Brand: Reinhold Merkelbach.
