Jose Angel Santos was born in Zacatecas but has lived in Tonala since he was a child. He is one of Tonala's most outstanding and sought after artists. Tonala, Jalisco is a well-known "art" suburb of Guadalajara with some of the most famous pottery artists in the world. At an early age, Angel expressed an interest in the punteado (use of dots) technique of decoration and in making clay pottery miniatures. He selects and mixes his own clays, letting them "ferment" for several days before kneading the clay on the floor barefoot. Once a piece is formed, he uses special stones periodically dipped in water to smooth it. Once the piece has dried, he prepares it with a special slip he has prepared from the clay. He uses fine brushes made from a variety of animals to paint the pieces using the same local clays. Finally, the piece is burnished (rubbed) with a pyrite stone while slightly moist. This ensures the paint is properly fixed and helps prevent fading. Brunido pottery (burnished) is a feature of Tonala pottery. It has a buttery smooth feel. His work can be found in collections around the world. His attention to detail has won him many awards. He is a featured artist in the book, "Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art."
