Vintage hand-carved East African Mother and Daughter sculpture integrated into a single, fluid piece of hardwood. Traditionally, it is Ebony, Teak, or Mahogany. Hand-carved from a single block of rich, dense hardwood. The artistic carving displays an asymmetrical, vertically stacked design. The main upper bust, thought to be the Mother, is adorned with a prominent, draped head wrap/gele. The second feminine face, thought to be the daughter, curves gracefully beneath it, connected by a hollow, open-carved neck and base. The smooth, polished surfaces juxtapose deeply carved details in the hair and headwear, capturing traditional stylized expressions common in Mid-Century modern African and tribal sculptures. The darker photos at the bottom (which also show the legal size envelope, for size comparison), are more of the deep, dark true color of the carving.
