This postcard has been stored in a plastic sleeve since the 1960s. This vintage postcard shows a group of American soldiers, referred to as "Sammies," preparing a meal, or "chow," in the street of a French village during World War I. The term "Sammies" was a popular nickname for American soldiers at the time, and the phrase "over there" was also commonly used to refer to the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe.   During World War I, American soldiers' food consisted of basic but filling rations, often supplemented by food parcels from home or food obtained from local civilians. The image depicts a scene of camaraderie and interaction with the local populace, as a few French children are shown observing the soldiers. The American Red Cross and other organizations also helped provide care for soldiers on the front lines.   Many postcards like this one were sent by soldiers to their loved ones back home as mementos and to let them know they were alive and well.
