The solid gold trim on the fancy handle is very rich looking while the lower garland has smaller gold leaves and gold grapes. The green leaves in the upper garland have gold grapes. The solid gold trim on the fancy handle is very rich looking while the lower garland has smaller gold leaves and gold grapes. The verge of the saucer, the rims, and the cup's foot are also trimmed in gold. This is a very colorful set on the high white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The saucer has a diameter of 5" and a height of 3/4". The demitasse cup has a diameter of 3 1/16" and a height of 1 7/8" with a capacity of 2 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this cup & saucer set is called mark #5 by Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition which was used starting in 1890 and continued until 1932. This also has the green & pink decorator's mark #8 which was used 1906-1932. It has the importer/retailer mark from Wanamaker and the mark was used from 1900-1920. This dates the item to 1906-1932. William Guerin Companies merged with JPL in 1912; this was further acquired by Bawo & Dotter (Elite Works) in about 1920. The JPL mark was still used at the former Pouyat factory until the company closed in 1932. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
