HISTORY/MARKS: Hammersley & Company, manufacturer of bone china at Alsager Pottery in Longton, England, traces their history back to Harvey Adams & Co. 1869-1885. Titus Hammersley was a partner and continued the concern as Harvey Adams & Company retiring in 1872. George Harris Hammersley continued in partnership with Harvey Adams, but was replaced by his brother Gilbert Hammersley about 1885. The business then traded as Hammersley & Co. & Gilbert was joined by his sons, Eric in 1910 and Leslie in 1919. The pottery was incorporated in 1932 becoming Hammersley & Co. (Longton) Ltd. Family control of the business continued until June of 1970 when it was acquired by Carborundum Company (the owner of Spode Ltd.) The mark Hammersley Spode was used 1981-1988. The Hammersley branded business was discontinued in 1988. Geoffrey A. Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks cites this mark as used 1939-1974.
