This is a lovely antique Chinese porcelain planter, rectangular in form and raised on four small block feet, hand-painted in classic underglaze blue and white. The rim is bordered on all four sides with a delicate scrolling vine motif punctuated by small dot clusters, framing the painted scene below and the pale celadon-toned interior glaze above. Measuring roughly 8 inches by 5 inches and standing 2 1/2 inches tall, it's the traditional footed shape long used in China for bonsai and penjing display as well as for growing small plants or bulbs indoors. The exterior sides are hand-painted with a continuous mountainous landscape scene, rolling hills rendered in soft washes of blue, a cluster of pine and scholar trees worked in fine cross-hatched brushwork, and a small figure with a walking staff making his way through the scene, a classic composition drawn from the long tradition of Chinese landscape painting applied to decorative porcelain. The rim is bordered on all four sides with a delicate scrolling vine motif punctuated by small dot clusters, framing the painted scene below and the pale celadon-toned interior glaze above. The base is unglazed, showing the raw clay body and natural kiln grit typical of traditional Chinese ceramic production, and carries no maker's mark, so this piece is offered as an unattributed antique rather than tied to a specific kiln or workshop. Based on the glaze tone, painting style, and footed form, this is estimated to date to the late 19th to early 20th century, though buyers with more specialized expertise are welcome to examine the photos closely for further dating.
