Up for sale is a genuine, original WWII-era U.S. military lensatic field compass manufactured by the highly regarded W. & L.E. Gurley instrument company out of Troy, New York. This M1938 model was standard issue for U.S. ground forces, including infantry and engineers during the war. The interior dial is sharply marked with the classic gold lettering: "W. & L.E. GURLEY, TROY, N.Y., U.S.A.". [ 1 ] Functionality: The inner compass card spins and floats freely, settling into place as it should. The mechanical flip-up sight alignment arm works. Exterior Casing: Shows honest, heavy battlefield character. There is distinct weathering, surface scratching, and oxidation present on the metal housing. [ 1 ] Soldier Personalization: The back of the casing features a hand-etched ID reading " JAN 707" carved directly into the black finish by the service member it was issued to. Glass/Dial: The internal glass and degrees markings remain highly legible and nicely preserved. This is a wonderful, untouched piece of history showing true field use, perfect for any WWII militaria, tactical layout, or historical display.
