Vintage Southeast Asian Octagonal Woven Bamboo / Rattan & Wood Keepsake Box – Herringbone Weave – Decorative Metal Bosses, Mid-Century circa 1950s to 1970s Unusual vintage Southeast Asian handmade lidded box, constructed in an octagonal form with finely split bamboo or rattan panels worked in a tight diagonal twill or herringbone-style weave. The woven panels are set within an elaborate warm-toned hardwood framework featuring deeply scalloped or cusped openings and small projecting feet. The same woven construction continues around the sides, lid and underside, giving the box a particularly finished and architectural appearance. Decorative dark metal mounts are accented with raised brass-toned hemispherical bosses, including a distinctive four-lobed central fitting. The fitted lid is finished with a turned wooden knob. Measures approximately 9½ inches wide × 5½ inches high . A particularly attractive example of Southeast Asian decorative basketry and woodworking, combining fine woven natural-fiber panels with unusually elaborate wood and metal detailing. Condition: Vintage condition with expected age-related surface wear, patina and oxidation to the metal fittings. The woven panels show natural variation associated with handmade construction.
