Antique Folk Art Basket Primitive Polychrome American Arts & Crafts Era handicraft basketry, early 20th Century, circa 1900 to 1940 Approximately 10 inches in diameter, the basket is exceptionally sturdy and rigid, constructed over a traditional crossed-spoke foundation with structural stakes radiating outward from the center and continuing into the walls. The body is densely woven with fine twisted plant-fiber cord, giving the surface a distinctive rope-like texture. The cord is worked in alternating natural and dyed shades of muted sage/gray-green, warm straw, brick/salmon red and reddish brown. Heavier fibrous and reed-like courses provide additional structure and decoration, with a substantial braided/plaited rim completing the basket. The long lustrous fibers are either sisal or a related natural cordage fibers; the heavier structural elements appear to be reed or rattan plant material. Period basketry literature and supply catalogs document the use of rattan/reed foundations together with natural and dyed tropical fibers, including twisted and braided fiber weavers. The basket has a particularly appealing folk-art character, with the simple horizontal polychrome bands and beautifully aged natural materials creating a restrained Arts & Crafts palette.
