Charming vintage hand-carved and hand-painted wooden folk art figure depicting a rustic musician playing a stringed instrument/guitar. The figure wears a broad sombrero and colorful serape/poncho with green trousers. Wonderful character details include an intentionally carved patch at one knee and bare feet, with one foot resting on a carved rock or stone. This is a genuinely hand-worked wooden piece rather than molded faux wood. The underside retains prominent irregular gouge/chisel marks from the carving process, while the expressive face, hands, individual toes, clothing folds and instrument have all been individually carved. Unsigned and unmarked. Based on the subject, construction and carving style, the piece appears consistent with vintage Mexican folk/tourist art, likely mid-to-late 20th century.
