The maker’s stamp shows the CAC with the Artist's Pallet Mark in purple. Belleek is just below it. Circa 1889 - 1906 The pitcher measures about 5.5" tall x 9" at the widest (including the handle). A gorgeous piece of American Belleek with rich colors in greens and a deep purple with a bit of yellow/orange. This is a cider pitcher, also used for lemonade in the late 1800's. CONDITION: The hand painted design is beautiful. There are some very small rough spots at the lower rounded area in back...barely noticeable and well within the expected limits for the age of this piece. There is another flaw on the lower portion of the handle. The paint has chipped off and it appears to have a fracture line in the paint around the lower handle. At first it looks as if the handle may have been glued BUT no there is no fracture, break, or repair on any other area of the handle. The handle is firm and secure. It appears the damage is in the paint layer. Lastly, on the handle is a manufacturing defect. See photos. HISTORY: American Belleek was a semi-transparent porcelain. Many companies made it. The Belleek name originated in Ireland and was brought over to the United States. 'CAC' designates Ceramic Art Company, one of whose founders was Walter Lenox. The Ceramic Art Company started business in 1889 in Trenton, New Jersey. The 'Ceramic Art Company' sold large quantities of china blanks to professional and amateur artists and they had their own in house artists. CAC operated from 1889 to 1906 when Lenox bought out the partners and changed the name to Lenox Belleek with a different backstamp (an encircled 'L' with the small artist's palette and the word Belleek beneath) until 1924. Due to the use of the word “Belleek” by Lenox and other American porcelain companies, the Irish Belleek Company sued them to stop using the word, and won. Today this company is known as Lenox China.
