Photography was invented in 1839 but only in the 1850's did an overwhelming demand for photographic portraits spur the invention of the "carte-de-visite" or CDV. This small approximately 4" x 2 1/2" photograph takes it's name from the French term for calling card. Many have claimed to have invented the cart-de-visite photograph, but it was Napoleon III's court photographer Andre A.E. Disderi (1819-1890) who took out a patent in November of 1854 and was subsequently credited with its invention. Carte-de-visite were made using a contact print, by placing the negative in contact with the albumen paper under glass and exposing the sandwiched materials to a light source. no enlarger was required. They wee mounted onto a standard size card.  It's popularity was almost instantaneous. Technical advances in photography and its increasing availability made it a novelty almost anyone could afford. The carte-de-visite appealed to aristocrats as well as the middle and lower classes. During the Civil War they were small enough for the soldiers to carry photos of their loved ones into battle. Later into the 1860's the fad dubbed "cartomania" was at it's peak. Everyone collected the cartes of royalty, celebrities, war heroes, friends and family members. Many carte-de-visite cards featured the names of the photographer or photographer's studio address on the backs.
