Other than a small chip at the top of the border (see photos above) it is free of cracks, nicks, and crazing. It bears what I believe is a "Kutani" mark on the underside in red and gold. This spectacular Kutani style bowl is an absolute knockout! This spectacular Kutani style bowl is an absolute knockout! The central motif is a traditional one--kimono-clad women and children stand beside a structure with a river and hills and trees in the background. The branches of a finely detailed flowering tree fill the sky above them with delicacy. Relatively standard, so far, but once you start to focus on the hand-painted gold detailing throughout, the only available response is WOW!! The colorful kimonos on the classically posed figures are beautifully adorned, as are the walls and floor and wooden trim of the house beside them. Yes, that appears to be wood grain rendered in gold. Who knew? The scalloped border of the bowl is even more jaw-dropping in its lavish application of gold and moriage amidst colorful flowers and abstract shapes. When the light hits this bowl, absolute wonders emerge from the shadows. The bowl, which is shallow, measures 11 1/4 inches diameter. This is one of the most beautiful and elaborately accented pieces in the "geisha" motif that I have come across since I began collecting and selling.
