While simply hand signed “Italy,” it is attributed to Fratelli Fanciullacci based on similar pieces signed with the maker’s “FF” mark. Fanciullacci produced ceramics at a factory near Florence for more than 75 years ending in 1988. The vessel is handcrafted with the typical Italian sense of mid century style. It features a modern looking angular body and an elongated spout, complete with an ice lip. The long spout beautifully balances its triangular, almost heart shaped handle. The jug is hand painted with bold brushstrokes in primary colors that stand out against an unusual lavender/pink background. The resulting decoration resembles fruits, leaves and vines. Sgraffito incising adds texture to the painted shapes, while orange bands define the rims, the midpoint and the handle. A lavender/pink interior and a lustrous overall glaze complete the design. Standing 7” high to the top of the handle, the pitcher measures 8 1/4” from the handle to the tip of the spout and 5 1/2” from front to back. It weighs 1 pound 12 ounces and will accommodate 4-5 cups of your favorite beverage (6 cups when filled to the rim). It is incised “Italy” on the bottom. Despite decades since its creation, this piece is in near perfect condition. It has no chips, cracks, fleabites or crazing. It shows the most minimal scuffs and light scratches. The glaze is lustrous. The colors are rich and robust. The notation on the base is not perfectly clear but is decipherable. A rough, partially unglazed bottom reflects the pitcher’s handcrafting.
