In researching this piece, we found similarities to nutcrackers produced byJOWEI (Johann Weih), the well-known woodcarving firm of Empfertshausen in Germany's Rhön region. An unusual vintage wooden nutcracker depicting a traditional miner, standing approximately 12 inches tall. The figure is constructed from numerous turned, cut and carved wooden components with an attractive natural and stained finish. Details include a green miner's helmet with raised wooden decorations and plume, carved facial features and mustache, individually formed hands, metal-tone uniform buttons, black shoes, wooden mining tool, and round wooden base. The nutcracker mechanism is operated by the long wooden lever extending down the back. In researching this piece, we found similarities to nutcrackers produced by JOWEI (Johann Weih), the well-known woodcarving firm of Empfertshausen in Germany's Rhön region . Johann Weih produced hand-carved decorative wooden figures and nutcrackers, including approximately 12-inch character figures with similar natural-wood construction and styling. However, this example has no visible JOWEI/Johann Weih label, maker's mark, or country-of-origin marking, and we have not located an exact documented match. Therefore, we are not representing it as a confirmed Johann Weih/JOWEI piece. It is being offered as an unidentified vintage wooden nutcracker with possible German/Rhön origins. Condition: Very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, repairs, or other damage to the wood noted. There is some wear to the finish/stain around the lower edge of the round base, consistent with age and display. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and construction details. A particularly attractive and unusual vintage nutcracker with considerably more carved detail and character than many later mass-produced examples. Photos are of the actual item.
