The design looks so classic. The flowers are within a white cartouche in the tan band that has a black geometric pattern. The rims are trimmed in gold. The hand painted pattern was introduced in 1912. Check our eBay store for more items in this pattern. We have a large set with some labeled as Nippon and others labeled as Made in Japan. So the circa date is 1918 when Noritake changed the stamp used. CONDITION: While this vegetable bowl is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks. There is no wear to the gold. There are a few very minor coal ash spots from the manufacturing. This is very common in pottery from the coal fired kilns of this era. DIMENSIONS: The bowl handle to handle measures10 1/4" with a diameter of 8 1/2" and a height of 4 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing porcelain china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan with its huge kaolin clay sources. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this set is the green M-in-Wreath Mark with Noritake on the top. Under that is "Handpainted" and "Nippon". The very bottom line has "Made in Japan". In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918.
