The vivid rust flowers were applied first, then overlaying that is the cobalt/gold leaves and ribbon along with other gold highlights. Both the cup and saucer are scalloped and lightly fluted. The saucer has the depth of an older style saucer. All rims, including the bottom of the flat demitasse cup, and the handle are trimmed in gold. CONDITION: The condition of this set is superb. While this demitasse cup & saucer set is classified as used, we can find no utensil wear or rubbing. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines or repairs to this stunning set. There is no wear to the gold on either piece. DIMENSIONS: The saucer has a diameter of 4 3/4" and a height of 11/16". The cup has a diameter of 2 5/16" and stands 2 3/8" tall. HISTORY/MARKS: The Derby Crown Porcelain Company was started in 1876 by William Litherland and Edward Phillips at Osmaston Road in Derby, England. The use of the title, “Royal”, was granted by Queen Victoria in 1890 and the company changed its name to Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Co. Ltd. Geoffrey A. Godden's Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks shows the mark (#1270) on the back of this piece was used from 1890 with the various years distinguished by year ciphers. The year cipher (XLIX) used on this indicates production in 1986. The company was known for producing good quality tableware, figurines, and decorative goods.
