This is a matching set of four small Chinese blue and white porcelain bowls, each measuring approximately 2 7/8 inches wide. Every bowl is hand-painted with a phoenix (feng huang), a mythical bird long associated with grace, virtue, and good fortune in Chinese decorative art, shown in an energetic pose with elaborately detailed tail feathers. Beside the phoenix, a fruiting spray with a checkered, textured surface (consistent with a pomegranate or similar auspicious fruit motif, traditionally symbolizing abundance and many descendants) fills out the composition. At the center of each bowl, a round white panel is left in reserve, unpainted, a stylistic void sometimes used on this type of ware for a crest or simply as a decorative pause in the design. The rim is bordered by a hand-painted triangular lambrequin (scalloped point) pattern, a classic border treatment seen on Chinese and Japanese export blue and white ceramics. No maker's mark is visible on the base of any of the four bowls, so this set is offered as vintage Chinese blue and white porcelain in the traditional phoenix-motif style rather than attributed to a specific factory. This type of hand-painted phoenix bowl was produced in quantity for domestic and export use through the mid-20th century and remains a well-loved, actively collected pattern today.
