Vintage STEPHENS #36 Boxwood Brass Bound Combination Rule & Level - 1858 Patent This is a vintage 12" STEPHENS & CO. No. 36  Boxwood & Brass Bound Combination Rule , Square, Bevel, Inclinometer, and Level.  Plus, this example is marked with the Patent Date of January 12, 1858 .   D.H. Stephens of Riverton, Connecticut was issued a Patent for this rule.  This rule was made by Stephens & Company. which was in business in Riverton, Connecticut from 1864 to 1901 .  I rate this combination ruler in GOOD CONDITION overall.   The level bubble works fine and appears to be original.   There is a steel bevel that slides out from the inside edge of the rule and does have some rust, which has been cleaned.  Most of the the numbers and markings are clear and easy to read.   A nice example of a Stephens Combination Rule marked with the early Patent Date for you to add to your antique measuring tool collection.
