This is a charming small antique porcelain chocolate/coffee pot marked on the base "Hand Painted, Nippon" beneath a rising sun device. The "Nippon" mark identifies this as Japanese export porcelain made specifically for the American market between 1891 and 1921, the period during which U.S. tariff law required Japanese ceramic exports to be marked with the country of origin using the word "Nippon" (Japan's name for itself); this particular rising-sun mark style has also been associated with early production from the Noritake company and its affiliated Morimura Bros. export houses. The pot stands 6.5 inches tall with a gently faceted, paneled body, a graceful curved spout, and a C-scroll handle, topped with a domed lid and a molded ball finial with gilt accents. The decoration is arranged in bands: a scalloped blue ribbon motif with a pseudo-calligraphic scrollwork design (a decorative flourish rather than actual script) alternates around the shoulder and lid with painted reserve panels, each hand-painted with a small bouquet of pink roses accented by lavender and yellow blossoms and soft green leaves. Fine gold trim lines the rim, base, handle, and panel borders throughout.
