The scene shows the dying lion pierced by a broken spear, resting protectively on a shield with the Bourbon fleur-de-lis while guarding a second shield bearing the Swiss cross. The carving includes the original inscriptions: 'HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI' ('To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss') and the date MDCCXCII (1792), commemorating the Swiss Guards who fell during the French Revolution. The tradition of wood carving in Brienz dates back to mid of the 19th century. People in the region were looking for new employment opportunities.
