Crafted from renowned Murano glass, they were named "millefiori" (Italian for "a thousand flowers") due to the characteristic floral patterns on their surface. "Millefiori" beads were produced throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily for export to Africa. Today, they can be found in many countries—including Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Ghana—where they are also known by the Ashanti name "chachasao."
