Striking original vintage photograph depicting a group of six African American men and women gathered closely around a table in what appears to be a nightclub, bar or supper-club setting. An exceptional candid view of mid-century Black social life, with period clothing and hairstyles, beer bottles and glasses on the table, cigarettes in hand, and a wonderfully dressed gentleman in suit, patterned tie and wide-brim hat. Several members of the group look directly toward the photographer, giving the image an unusually intimate and immediate quality. Believed to date approximately to the 1940s–early 1950s based on the clothing, hairstyles, setting and photographic characteristics. Exact location and identities are unknown. Condition is very poor but the image remains compelling and substantially visible. Photograph has extensive surface and emulsion loss, staining, creasing, cracking, tears, edge losses, abrasions and old mounting/adhesive residue, particularly severe along the lower portion and reverse. Sold strictly as found and shown. No restoration has been attempted. A remarkable surviving piece of African American vernacular photography and mid-century nightlife/social history. Condition: Used.
