T he atmospheric light, observation of nature, and looser brushwork seen here are associated with the  plein-air and Impressionist-influenced landscape tradition of the period. American artists and illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries often looked abroad for picturesque European subjects. Venice, with its atmospheric light, historical architecture, canals, and boats, was especially popular with American painters of the period. Sheppard was a Brooklyn-born artist best known for illustration and landscapes. His work was seen in many American publications including The Brooklyn Eagle, New York Herald Tribune, New York Sun, Century, and Scribner's.
