Description:  A mint condition example of Sputnik 1, which was the first artificial Earth satellite, launched in the then CCCP (Russia or USSR) on October 4, 1957 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aka Baikonur Site 1 or Site 1/5.  This is the 25 th  Anniversary edition in absolutely pristine shape which includes the original box in Good to Very Good condition.  The box is primarily red, white, and blue.  This piece of space exploration memorabilia, which was exclusively sold in small quantities in Russia 40 years ago, represented the official start of the Space Race.  It was produced at the height of the Cold War during the Ronald Reagan administration.  It typified the type of posturing which occurred between the  Union of Soviet Socialists Republics (e.g., 25th Anniversary of Sputnik 1 in 1982) and the  United States (e.g., 1983's  Star Wars Missile Defense System or Strategic Defense Initiative).
