The portrait is illegibly signed "Morize...". It is a very rare work (and only fifth known one - see our web nr.33399 ) of late 18th century female artist from Toulouse Mme Morize de Vallade. Schidlof writes about the author that she was "very skillful artist who worked in a style which shows some resemblance to that of Claude Hoin… Mme Morize de Vallade was very probably an amateur miniaturist, but possessed an exceptional talent…". Both Schidlof and Lemoine-Bouchard mention the same miniature (dated 1792) by this artist and, based on that, maintain that she worked around 1792. We were able to discover on the web a much earlier reference to this lady with clips published in 1846 "Histoire des Institutions Religieuses, Politiques, Judiciaires et Littéraires de la Ville de Toulouse" by Alexandre Du Mège. Among the professional artists (and not amateurs as thought by Schidlof!) of this city the author mentions "Mme Morize, peintre en miniature", who was active there in 1784 (!).
