DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION: Lillian Vernon (1927-2015): Pregnant with her first child, Lillian Vernon searched for a way to stay home and yet augment the family budget. She turned her kitchen into a mail-order business, initially selling monogrammed accessories for teenage girls. To get her business off the ground, she took $495 of her meager savings, bought an ad in the September 1951 issue of Seventeen magazine, and soon the orders were pouring in. By 1994, the business she started in her kitchen had sales approaching $200 million. Lillian Vernon became the first female-owned company to be publicly listed at the New York Stock Exchange.
