This substantial piece features a wonderfully sculptural elongated elephant form with a curled trunk, carved ears, small feet, and inset metal eyes. The rich reddish brown hardwood displays beautiful natural grain and warm aged character. Traditionally referred to as an “opium pillow” or headrest, today it makes a unique piece of Asian décor and a striking addition to a collection of Chinese, MCM, or global decorative arts. Condition: Beautiful age related wear throughout, including surface checking and natural wood movement. A small, unobtrusive loss is present at the tip of the nostril (see photos), consistent with age and adding to its authentic character.
