Homer Laughlin Eggshell Georgian Countess Pattern Dinner Plate Three Pieces, Pink and Yellow Roses with fern like leafing. They are in good condition, used, with no chips, no crazing, light utensil marks apparent, some glazing imperfections typical of this type of pottery . 10" diameter. Gold guilding on rim is worn. Circular Gold line separates the outer eggshell color from the white center. Laughlin manufacturer code on bottom of two plates is: H49 N 5, (August 1949), and the other one is J49 N5. (June 1949). The Eggshell appearance projects an off white light yellow color and the Georgian shape manifests the Bead Chain pattern at the outer edge coupled with the slightly depressed bowl shaped center. These pieces were manufactured at Newell, West Virginia, USA on the banks of the Ohio River in the Homer Laughlin Pottery Factory, Kiln Plant number 5. The Countess Pattern which is transfer printed onto the plate, was first issued in 1943 became very popular. this form was very popular just after it’s entry into the marketplace just prior to WW II. In 1937, the Laughlin company decided that it wanted to appeal to the fine-china market and introduced "Eggshell," which was a lightweight body with thin "chinalike" edges. This body was used on four different shapes — "Nautilus," "Swing," "Theme" and “Georgian."   A gold guilding line surrounds the plates on the outer edges. The pattern is common to find and is of course, discontinued. Georgian dinnerware tableware patterns were produced from 1943 into the early 1960´s. Some patterns were sold at discount with the redemption of Quaker Oats Box premium symbols. Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin built a pottery in East Liverpool Ohio in 1873. They were natives of the area being born on Beaver Creek near East Liverpool and the Ohio River. After the Civil War Homer and his brothers had worked in the pottery industry in production and sales but were not expert in technical aspects of making ware. 1876 they were awarded a medal for best white ware at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Throughout the 1880's Homer Laughlin produced a variety of ware, mostly of a basic white which could be used in hotels and other public institutions. In 1886 he had truly made what could be termed genuine American china. Peak production for the company was in 1948 when they produced 10,129,449 dishes. The Homer Laughlin China Company is still, today, the U.S.A.'s largest producer of china. Some of the plants have been abandoned and closed but the company still operates at the Newell, West Virginia site. See photos, which are a part of the description. Item will be insured.
