It's as though the artists outlined the scene in moriage, then dabs of color were added afterwards. Up for your consideration is a set of 2 Antique 1920s Japanese Kutani-Sei Geisha 6" bread plates A LITTLE HISTORY: The word Kutani means 'Nine Valleys' in Japanese, and is the name of an area and a village region located in the Ishikawa prefecture in northern Japan. Since Kutani is a place, almost all pieces marked with that name were decorated there by artists, manufacturers or trading shops rather than in a single factory. Kutani Sei generally describes Japanese geisha-ware porcelain with "Rivers Edge" type patterns with mountains, trees, water features, bridges, walkways and arches in the background details. Back-marks can be any color and handwritten markings are easily illegible due to poor penmanship of the hurried artists. Most of the early 20th-century pieces were made for export using 'gaudy colors', moriage details and geisha-girls, meant to appeal to western tastes. FEATURES:   *  The word "moriage" means 'to pile up' and is a special type of raised decoration used on some Japanese Kutani porcelain, including these 2 plates. It's as though the artists outlined the scene in moriage, then dabs of color were added afterwards *  Plates are hand-painted with red, green, blue and purple highlights *  Hand-painted details on these pieces are similar, but on a closer look, you'll find interesting differences *  These delicate bread plates match a few other Kutani pieces listed on my site.
