View Vintage 18 in Union MFG CO Wood Plane Corrugated New Britain Ct with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. It is heavy duty and seems to be more substantial that the Stanley line of all their planes. Having had many Stanley and Stanley/Bailey and plain Bailey planes this just feels like it has a more robust heft to it. This posting is for an 18 inch long x 3 inch wide early 1900 corrugated wood plane. It is heavy duty and seems to be more substantial that the Stanley line of all their planes.  Having had many Stanley and Stanley/Bailey and plain Bailey planes this just feels like it has a more robust heft to it.  The grip, handle, TOTE seem to be made of mahogany and not rosewood.  The body has no chips anywhere.  All parts are here and they are all in good shape.  The only stamping or embossing on the plane is on the plane iron.  It says UNION MFG CO, NEW BRIT, CON.  See pictures.  The best I could do after many attempts.  The plane iron cap on the back side is embossed with 2 1/4, and that's all.  And the plane iron measures 7 3/8 x 2 1/4.  There is some slight, very slight, rust pitting in a few places.  It is almost not noticeable.   One is on the plane iron and the other is the left side of the plane.  The following is a statement I found on the interweb.  "The typical Union Planes are on par with Bailey. In 1900 Union Purchased Derby (Birmingham) Plane Manufacturing. In 1920 Stanley Purchased the Union plane division. I never persued finding out about Union Mfg, until I decided to post it and sell it.  I have had it many years.  "The Union Manufacturing Company, located in New Britain, Connecticut, The new company's primary role was as a support foundry and machine shop.  Early products ranged from simple tools to chucks and planes. Around 1880, the Union Manufacturing Company began manufacturing drill and lathe chucks based on a June 1, 1875, patent filed by James N. Skinner. The drill and lathe chucks were sold under the VIC TOR brand. A line of improved chucks based on a June 27, 1899 patent were branded UNION CZAR. The Union Manufacturing Company also manufactured a line of metal and transitional planes under contract from other manufacturers. Spoke shaves and scrapers were introduced into the product line. Union Manufacturing Company produced marked planes between 1898 and 1899. In 1899, Union acquired the remnants of the Birmingham Plane Company, located in Derby. The company introduced a line of "B Plane" marked planes but eventually manufactured them under its own brands. Then, in 1957, the Union Manufacturing Company bought the Charles Parker Company and moved its production to its New Britain manufacturing plant. In late 1984, Union began closing divisions before selling the remainder of its assets to Scovill, Inc. Union ceased operations in 1986 when Cushman Industries closed its doors. However, in 2019, Union was revitalized and reorganized as a privately held corporation owned by shareholders. Union's manufacturing facilities are now located in Boyertown, Pennsylvania."
