Work at this level of finish has effectively left current production. Material: Hand-carved solid linden wood. The paint surface carries fine craquelure consistent with age — old, stable, part of what this piece is. The gold leaf at the base of this figure is doing structural work — the scrolling acanthus forms at the hem curl outward and lift free of the surface, each volute undercut so the gold catches light from beneath. The feet emerge from the drapery above them, gold-leafed, the toes individually carved. This is the detail that disappears when you step back from the piece, and it was cut with the same care as everything visible at eye level. The child is fully in the round — the fingers of both hands individually carved, the toes separated, the body modeled with anatomical attention at a scale that required a different tool than the one used on the mother's face. The hair on both figures falls in separated strands rather than suggested as a mass. The reverse is fully painted throughout — the veil and mantle continue around the back in the same polychrome palette, the gold leaf accents carry through to the reverse edges. The paint surface carries fine craquelure consistent with age — old, stable, part of what this piece is. These pieces required two craftsmen to complete — the carver who shaped the linden, and the specialist who applied the polychrome painting and genuine gold leaf by hand. Both trades are disappearing in the Alpine workshops. Work at this level of finish has effectively left current production.
