The rocks once were a universal stuff which forms the very core of the world, now cooled and hardened into crystalline mass. The peculiar shape of the valley—an abrupt trough cut deep across the Sierra Nevada range—seems to have been caused by some sudden subsidence of the crust of the earth. We are now nearly 3,200 feet in the dizzy air above the valley where the little Merced River flows limpidly along the bottom of the trough. The cliffs on which we are standing go down almost in sheer perpendiculars for two-thirds of a mile. Think of that distance in a horizontal direction on some familiar street and then measure it as a street up an end. It looks as if one could, with a good jump, land on the bald pate of Half Dome, though that rock is fully two miles and a half away, as the crow flies. On that side fronting the Tenaya Valley, one thousand feet it is absolutely vertical. Beyond, on the left, is Clouds’ Rest, and, in the right-hand range, rises to the sky-line of Mt. Clark. (See “The Yosemite Valley Through the Stereoscope,” with special keyed map identifying all the leading features. Condition: Good vintage condition with light surface wear and mild edge rubbing consistent with age. Images remain clear, and text is legible. No major creases or losses observed.
