Pierre Zenobel (1905-1996), born in Geneva, studied there at the School of Applied Arts before moving to Paris in 1925. He also participated at the first Congress of Independent Cinema in La Sarraz, Switzerland, where he took photographs of the participants, including the famous Russian filmmaker, Sergei Eisenstein. Pierre Zenobel (1905-1996) , Vintage French Watercolor, Landscape, Village in Provence, Signed, ca1947, Framed in Hong-Kong T his charming vintage French watercolor dating from 1947 depicts a landscape in Provence with a village and its church. It is signed “ Zenobel ”. Pierre Zenobel (1905-1996), born in Geneva, studied there at the School of Applied Arts before moving to Paris in 1925. Starting his career as an illustrator and designer, he designed famous posters for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique , the Train Bleu and the city of Paris (see the excerpt below from the Paris Times). During the 1920’s and 1930’s, he exhibited in Paris at the Union des Artistes Modernes , of which he was a member, at the Salon d’Automne , at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs , at the American Library , rue de l’Elysée , and at the Maison de la Culture , rue d’Anjou . He also exhibited in Italy, including in Rome and at the Mostra delle arti decorative in Monza. He also participated at the first Congress of Independent Cinema in La Sarraz , Switzerland, where he took photographs of the participants, including the famous Russian filmmaker, Sergei Eisenstein. Starting in 1940, he worked as a designer for Japy and for Oberthur . After WWII, he began to concentrate on painting. He exhibited during the 1950’s and 1960’s at the Société des Artistes Indépendants , of which he was a member. He was regularly honored with shows in Paris, such as at the Galerie Suillerot in 1948. The Bibliothèque Forney in Paris and the city of Fesches-le-Châtel have his works in their collections. He also appears in online art databases and in the sold listings of various world auction houses. This watercolor was framed in Hong-Kong as indicated by the sticker on the back as well as by the inscriptions on the mounting board. Framed, matted and under glass, this lovely piece is in very good condition with the exception of very slight warping on the upper part of the paper, a few stains on the mat and normal signs of age.
