Vintage Empire Spring Joint 6-Foot Folding Wood Ruler — Carpenter's Layout & Measuring Tool Here is a classic  Empire "Spring Joint" 6-foot folding wood ruler  from one of America's most recognized measuring tool brands. This iconic style of folding rule was the standard carpenter's layout and measuring tool throughout the mid-20th century — before the flexible steel tape measure took over job sites — and remains a favorite among woodworkers, craftspeople, and vintage tool collectors who appreciate the precision and tactile quality of a good folding rule. The  spring joint mechanism  automatically opens each segment to a locked 180° position as you unfold the rule, providing a rigid, straight measuring surface that a flexible tape can't match for layout work. The  white-painted wood segments  with clear black printed graduations remain legible throughout the full 72" length. The "EMPIRE / SPRING JOINTS" branding appears in red text on the opening segment. The metal joints show age-related rust and oxidation — standard for rules of this era — and will benefit from a light cleaning and a drop of oil on each joint to restore smooth operation.
