An exceptional early 19th century French portrait miniature likely of the Chasseur *light cavalry* or a similar French provincial cavalry regiment. His insignia match those of a junior officer, likely a Lieutenant or Sub Lieutenant , with heavily fringed silver epaulette on his left shoulder and a silver counter epaulette strap on his right. Wafer: The organic wafer remains stable and flat. A fine vertical stress crack follows the natural grain along the left side and passes through the signature area. This is commonly encountered on authentic period portrait miniatures and remains stable beneath the bezel. Paint and Glass: The watercolor retains excellent color and detail. Minor age-related paint loss is present within the red collar along with light oxidation to the silver metallic paint of the epaulette. A faint haze is visible on the inside of the protective glass over part of the green uniform, which is strictly on the glass and not on the painted surface. Bezel and Fit: The brass bezel has slight movement within the wooden opening, with a small gap visible between the bezel and veneer. Several original retaining tabs on the reverse are absent. The portrait remains secure for display but should be handled carefully. Frame and Backing: The fruitwood frame retains its original teal blue backing paper. The veneer has an age-related shrinkage crack extending downward from the lower edge of the bezel. Minor edge wear, small chips, and light handling marks are consistent with age.
