This is a particularly striking piece because of its sculptural form. Hand Painted Violets Porcelain Covered Jar Gilt Molded Finial 8.5” Urn Cookie Biscuit Jar Beautiful Unmarked Hand-Painted Violet Porcelain Covered Cookie Biscuit Jar / Urn A substantial and unusually formed vintage porcelain covered jar featuring beautiful hand-painted/hand-decorated purple violets and foliage, molded relief decoration, and gilt accents. This is a particularly striking piece because of its sculptural form. The lower body is deeply ribbed in a melon-like shape, rising into tall paneled sides decorated with soft sprays of purple and lavender violets and green foliage. Large raised molded leaves extend from the lower body onto the paneled section. They are finished in a soft pale green and highlighted with gold detailing. The fitted domed lid repeats the deeply ribbed design of the body and is embellished with additional molded leaves and gilt accents. It is topped with an ornate molded floral-bud finial surrounded by scrolling leaves/petals, with a gold collar beneath. The floral decoration has a lovely soft, painterly quality, with visible variation in the violets, leaves and brushwork. The combination of the floral painting, sculptural molding and gilding gives the piece a beautiful old-world appearance. This piece is completely unmarked. The bottom, interior and underside of the lid have all been carefully examined, and no manufacturer’s backstamp, artist’s signature or identifying mark has been found. Because of this, I am not attributing the piece to a particular maker, country or specific period. The jar came from the estate of a woman who lived to approximately 102 years old and was among a collection of older decorative items. Its history prior to the estate is unknown. Approximate measurements: • Height: 8½ inches, from base to top of finial • Width: approximately 7 inches at the widest point Condition: Very nice pre-owned estate condition. No chips or cracks noted. There is expected age-related wear/loss to portions of the gilt decoration, particularly on the finial and other raised areas. The finial is intact and not chipped; the lighter area visible at the top is surface/decorative wear. The unglazed foot ring also shows normal age/use wear. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition. The interior is fully glazed and cleanly finished. The lid is fitted with an inner seating ring and appears original to the vessel. A beautiful display piece for collectors of hand-painted porcelain, violet-decorated china, floral porcelain, covered jars, decorative urns and unusual molded porcelain.
