Beautiful vintage Peruvian mate burilado, handcrafted from a dried calabash gourd and covered with remarkably detailed engraved and darkened illustrations. Created in the traditional folk-art style associated with Cochas and the Mantaro Valley near Huancayo, Peru. The numbered scenes form two continuous illustrated stories. “Historia del tejido de la lana,” or “The Story of Wool Weaving,” depicts the preparation of wool through steps such as cutting, boiling, spinning, and weaving. “Historia de un matrimonio en el campo,” or “The Story of a Marriage in the Countryside,” follows a rural courtship and wedding through family meetings, gifts to the couple, preparations, and traditional community customs. The subject matter and fine narrative style are closely related to work produced by the Poma family of Cochas, including a documented marriage-themed example by master artisan Delia Poma. However, this piece is unsigned, so its individual maker cannot be confirmed. Measures approximately 3.5” × 4” × 4”. In good vintage condition with age-related marks, scratches, and dark markings on the bottom. Natural variations in the gourd are present.
