A beautiful and unusually large antique Tressemanes & Vogt (T&V) Limoges France porcelain serving dish, measuring approximately 14 inches long by 6 inches wide and 2 inches high . Its elongated, gently scalloped form would originally have been used as an elegant celery, relish or vegetable serving dish , while today it makes an equally striking display piece. The dish is exquisitely hand painted and individually artist signed , with loosely arranged sprays of daisy-like flowers in soft shades of blush pink, lavender, powder blue and creamy white. Fine, feathery brushstrokes give the petals wonderful movement and depth, while delicate stems and translucent foliage trail gracefully across the center of the dish. Particularly beautiful is the softly painted background. Rather than leaving the porcelain stark white, the artist created an almost watercolor-like setting of pale celadon green, blue, cream and warm umber . Loose, atmospheric washes of umber create areas of shadow and depth behind the blossoms, allowing the lighter flowers to emerge dramatically from the background. The warm umber coloration visible among the floral decoration is part of the original hand-painted design and not staining or discoloration . A slender gold-gilt border follows the softly scalloped edge, providing an elegant frame for the pastel decoration without overwhelming its delicate, painterly character. The overall effect is romantic and distinctly turn-of-the-century , with a naturalistic, almost impressionistic quality rather than the more formal floral decoration often seen on porcelain of the period. The underside bears the green T&V Limoges France mark of Tressemanes & Vogt , an important Limoges porcelain concern whose partnership began in 1882 . The firm acquired porcelain manufacturing facilities in Limoges in 1891 and became particularly associated with high-quality porcelain produced for the export trade, including the important American market. Tressemanes retired from the partnership in 1907 , after which Gustave Vogt continued the business until it was acquired by Martial Raynaud in 1919 .
