This ring, probably made in the 1990s or early aughts, came to us set with a somewhat tired "mystic topaz," which is clear topaz that's been dipped in a coating to give it an aurora borealis effect.  We jettisoned this stone, mystic or otherwise, and replaced it with a new amethyst in pale lilac.  This color is sometimes called "Rose de France" to distinguish it from the primary purple shade we usually associate with amethyst.  It's lighter and a little more pink and it looks smashing in this simple but substantial and contemporary  setting. The oval amethyst has a nice checkerboard cut and is 21mm x 14mm x 9.5mm.  It weighs 15.5 carats.   The stone is held in place with four prongs that form the ring's split shoulders.   In the back, the band is 3.6mm wide and 1.1mm thick. The inside of the ring has a maker's mark that we can't make out, plus "14K."   According to the mandrel, the ring is a size 7, but it fits more like an 8 because there's so much wiggle room behind the stone.  It is resizable. Please note that we had this ring assayed (the certificate is included in the photo array), and it's actually not quite 14 karat gold.  It's 13.9K -- so instead of being 58.3% pure gold, it's 57.9% pure gold.
