Charming vintage porcelain shelf-sitter figurine made in Occupied Japan during the post-World War II period of 1945–1952. This delightful figure depicts a young girl seated with her legs dangling while holding an open book, appearing to read or sing aloud. She wears a warm peach-orange dress with puffed sleeves, blue sash and bow, striped stockings, glossy red shoes and bright red bows in her dark pigtails. Her expressive hand-painted face features rosy cheeks, delicately arched eyebrows and an open mouth. The figurine is specially shaped to sit securely along the edge of a shelf, mantel, bookcase or display cabinet with the legs hanging freely below. The underside is hollow and carries an original red “Made in Occupied Japan” backstamp. No separate factory name or maker’s symbol is present, so the manufacturer is listed as unknown.
