Japanese Hanging Scroll Handwritten Zen Calligraphy 'Juzan Ro Kaki' KAKEJIKU   MB740 Description This is a Japanese kakejiku hanging scroll featuring original handwritten Zen calligraphy by Fukumoto Sekio (福本積應), a Buddhist monk associated with the Daitokuji school of Rinzai Zen. The work is titled “Juzan Ro Kaki” (寿山籠佳気) and is written as a powerful single vertical line of calligraphy. The phrase may be understood as “The Mountain of Longevity is enveloped in auspicious energy,” expressing wishes for longevity, good fortune, peace, and favorable circumstances. Such auspicious phrases have long been appreciated in Japanese Zen calligraphy and are particularly suitable for celebratory occasions, seasonal displays, tea rooms, and traditional interiors. The four large characters dominate the composition with strong, energetic brushwork. Thick pools of ink alternate with dry-brush passages where the individual bristles of the brush remain visible, giving the writing considerable movement and texture. The opening character 寿, meaning longevity, is especially bold and expansive, immediately establishing the celebratory character of the work. The following characters descend in a rhythmic sequence, balancing heavy black strokes with open areas of untouched paper. Along the lower left side is the artist’s inscription, accompanied by multiple red seals. An additional red seal appears near the upper portion of the work, creating a restrained contrast against the monochrome calligraphy. The calligraphy is executed by hand in ink on paper and mounted in a refined pale cream and soft gold-toned traditional scroll mounting. The subtle textile patterns allow the expressive black calligraphy to remain the visual focus while giving the entire piece an elegant and formal appearance. This work dates approximately from the Showa to Heisei period and comes with its matching wooden storage box. Artist Fukumoto Sekio (福本積應) was born in Kyoto in 1930 and became a Buddhist monk associated with Horinji Temple of the Daitokuji tradition. He is known for Zen calligraphy characterized by vigorous brushwork and concise Buddhist or auspicious phrases. His calligraphic works are often used in chashitsu tea rooms, tokonoma alcoves, and Zen-related settings, where the expressive movement of the brush and the philosophical meaning of the written phrase form an important part of the viewing experience.
